Hampton House
The renovation of a mid-century family home in South West London replaced a gas boiler and radiators with one system for heating in winter and cooling in summer.

- Whole-house renovation over three floors
- Energy source
- Panasonic air source heat pump
- Air handlers
- Two 10 kW units
- Outlets
- Round and linear
The challenge
The owners wanted a sustainable replacement for fossil-fuel heating. Rooms behave differently depending on their orientation: some bedrooms cool quickly, the top-floor master suite runs warm, and the open-plan kitchen and living area needed even heat with no cold corners. Renovation was already well under way, so room layouts and wall positions could not change.
The solution
Flexible ducting was routed above ceilings, beneath floors and behind walls, with 16 mini-ducts leading from the main ductwork into the rooms. A heat pump supplies two compact 10 kW air handlers, tucked into the ground-floor utility room and high in the central stairwell. Round and linear outlets were positioned for even coverage, and each room has its own controller.
The result
Walking through the house, it is hard to tell that a heating and cooling system has been installed at all. With no radiators on the walls, the owners have far more freedom over furniture and room layouts, the warmth is constant throughout, and the system can hardly be heard.
“A single system that we can use for our original intention – heating the home in the cooler months – but with the versatility to switch to air conditioning in the summer.”
