A refurbished and extended family home gained quiet, unobtrusive air conditioning for its upper floors, powered by an air source heat pump.

- Panasonic air source heat pump
- Outlets
- 66 mm round ceiling outlets
- Noise
- As low as NR20
The challenge
The owners wanted cooling that could run on renewables, would be barely visible and would operate with minimal noise. Ceiling cassettes were ruled out. The new system also had to work independently of, and alongside, the existing radiators and underfloor heating.
The solution
Pairs of 66 mm round outlets were set into the bedroom ceilings. Flexible mini-ducts fit within the 150 mm ceiling voids and pass through the eaves and partition walls, and were installed late in the build without disruption. The compact air handler sits in a landing cupboard, linked to a heat pump on the flat roof of the extension, with a touch controller in the master bedroom.
The result
Temperature varies by no more than 1°C across a room, with no draughts or cold spots, and the system is quiet enough not to disturb sleep. With more working from home, the owners now use it through warm days as well as nights.
