The challenge
The room could be unusable in warm weather and too cold in winter. Its refurbishment included hand-painting the walls, and the architect and engineers would not accept a conventional ceiling unit in such a historic interior. They wanted a discreet small-duct system with a renewable energy source.
The solution
A 10 kW air handling unit with heating and cooling coils sits in the space above the ceiling. It draws heat from the existing biomass boiler, fuelled from managed woodland on Newmarket Gallops, and cooling from an air source heat pump. Insulated flexible ducts of 105 mm diameter feed two custom eight-metre linear slots just below ceiling level.
The result
Once a temperature is set it is reached quickly and held within about 1°C across the room, without draughts. A CO2 sensor matches the fresh air supply to the number of people present, saving energy.
